La composizione

A white sandalwood, Santalum album, grown in northern Australia and distilled in Vietnam: creamy, warm, and woody. It shares the same species as our Nepalese sandalwood, but not its origin or distillation, which makes it a good point of comparison.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Santalum album L., white sandalwood, is a tree in the Santalaceae family. It is native to Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, the Philippines, and northern Australia, in the Northern Territory and Western Australia.

It is a hemiparasite: its roots attach to those of other trees to take some of their water and nutrients. That is why plantations in Australia, such as those in the Kununurra region in northern Western Australia, are grown alongside host trees.

The aromatic material is in the heartwood, the inner wood of the trunk and roots, which becomes enriched with oil as the tree ages.

+ 02 — Extraction and production

The wood is pulverized and steam-distilled; this batch was distilled in Vietnam. The joint presence of α- and β-santalol is the chemical signature of S. album.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The pure oil. Creamy, warm, and woody.

+ 04 — Applications in perfumery
  • Woody bases: softness, creaminess, and persistence.
  • Attars and oriental florals: a classic base for flowers and spices.
  • Study: compared to our Nepalese sandalwood, of the same species; compared to Australian S. spicatum, of a different species.
