The composition

The damask rose is the perfumer's rose, and Bulgaria one of its most celebrated origins. This absolute, solvent-extracted from fresh flowers, captures the richest side of the bloom: a deep, honeyed and lightly spicy rose.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Rosa × damascena Herrm. is a rose of the family Rosaceae. It does not occur in the wild: it is an ancient hybrid of Rosa gallica and Rosa moschata, propagated by cuttings for centuries.

In Bulgaria it is grown mainly in the Rose Valley around Kazanlak, between the Balkan Mountains and Sredna Gora. The flowers are picked by hand in the early morning, over a few short weeks in May and June.

+ 02 — Extraction

The fresh flowers are solvent-extracted to give a waxy concrete, which is then washed in ethanol to remove the waxes and yield the absolute.

The absolute differs from the distilled essential oil. Phenylethyl alcohol, with its rose-and-honey scent, dissolves readily in water, so in distillation much of it stays in the rose water; in the absolute it is the main component, alongside citronellol, geraniol and nerol.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The neat absolute. A deep, honeyed rose with a spicy nuance and a warm base.

+ 04 — Uses in perfumery
  • Rose and oud: the classic accord of Arabian perfumery, with oud and sandalwood.
  • Chypres: a floral heart over oakmoss, labdanum and patchouli.
  • Attars: on sandalwood, with saffron and spices.
  • Florals: rounds out jasmine, orris and violet.

Contains declarable allergens and methyl eugenol, which is restricted by IFRA. Check the batch certificate before formulating.
