Vintage Wild Thyme Essential Oil (1960)

Botanical origin: Thymus serpyllum

Approximate year of production: 1960s

Extraction: Steam distillation of the flowering aerial parts.

Olfactory description

This wild thyme essential oil comes from a production made approximately in the 1960s and has been aging for over six decades. The result is an exceptionally rare raw material whose aromatic profile differs notably from that observed in contemporary essential oils.

Unlike fresh thymes, where more aggressive and phenolic herbaceous notes predominate, prolonged aging has considerably softened the sharper facets, revealing an extraordinary aromatic complexity.

The opening presents dry, aromatic, and warm herbal notes, accompanied by nuances reminiscent of Mediterranean scrub, aged hay, and sun-dried herbs. As it evolves, balsamic, slightly medicinal, and spicy facets emerge, adding depth and richness to the whole.

The base develops woody, resinous, and softly amber notes, very far from the more linear character usually found in recent materials.

Aromatic evolution

- Top: dry herbal, aromatic, and Mediterranean.

- Heart: balsamic, spicy, and slightly phenolic.

- Base: resinous, woody, and warmly amber.

Applications in perfumery

Particularly interesting material for:

- Botanical perfumery.

- Historical reconstructions.

- Mediterranean accords.

- Natural fougères.

- Complex herbal compositions.

- Traditionally inspired perfumery.

Pairs particularly well with:

- Lavender.

- Rosemary.

- Sage.

- Frankincense.

- Cedarwood.

- Vetiver.

- Oakmoss.

- Labdanum.

- Patchouli.

- Bergamot.

Its aged profile provides an aromatic richness and softness difficult to find in modern thyme essential oils.

Technical observations

- Color: golden yellow to amber.

- Consistency: fluid.

- Aromatic intensity: medium-high.

- Diffusion: medium.

- Tenacity: high.

As with other historical essential oils, prolonged aging has favored the natural integration of numerous aromatic components, generating a more rounded, complex, and balanced raw material.

Historical interest

Wild thyme has traditionally been used in perfumery, herbalism, and pharmacy due to its intense aromatic character. Preserved specimens from the mid-20th century are extremely scarce and allow us to study how natural raw materials evolve after decades of proper storage.

Unlike modern essential oils, which are made for relatively quick consumption, these historical materials have developed aromatic nuances that can only appear after long periods of natural maturation.

Collector's item

This 1960s Wild Thyme is a true aromatic collector's item. Its rarity, age, and complexity make it a particularly attractive material for perfumers, collectors, and enthusiasts of historical raw materials.

More than a simple essential oil, it represents an opportunity to experience the scent of a distillation made over half a century ago, preserving part of the aromatic heritage of a practically vanished era.
