The composition

Shaabi is the driest and most direct expression of Omani frankincense. It comes from the same Boswellia sacra as the Hojari grades, with a dry, resinous and balsamic character.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Boswellia sacra Flück. is a shrub or small tree in the Burseraceae family, native to desert areas of northern Somalia, southern Yemen and southwestern Oman. When incisions are made in its bark, the tree releases an oleo-gum-resin that hardens in the air into tears.

The Dhofar region in southern Oman was the heart of the frankincense trade for centuries. UNESCO inscribed it as the Land of Frankincense World Heritage Site in 2000.

+ 02 — Olfactory profile

The resin. Dry, resinous and balsamic, more straightforward and less citrusy than the Hojari selections.

+ 03 — Uses
  • Natural incense: burned on charcoal or an electric incense burner.
  • Tinctures and macerations: dry, resinous base notes.
  • Comparison: alongside Royal Green Hojari, which is fresher and more citrusy, and the warmer Amber Hojari.
