Civet Paste

Origin: Ethiopia

Raw material: Civet secretion

Presentation: Pure undiluted paste

Olfactory description

Civet paste is one of the most potent and influential animal raw materials in the history of perfumery. Its aroma in its pure state is extraordinarily intense and complex, very far from the soft notes it develops when used diluted in perfumery.

In the undiluted raw material, intense animal, fecal, ammoniacal, and urinary facets predominate. These characteristics, far from being considered defects, are part of the material's aromatic identity and explain its extraordinary transformative capacity within a composition.

When used in appropriate dilutions, civet undergoes a radical transformation. The more aggressive notes progressively disappear and give way to musky, warm, sweet, and surprisingly soft facets. Many perfumers find in it an enveloping sensation that partially recalls certain aspects of ambergris and traditional natural musks.

Applications in perfumery

Civet has been used for centuries as one of the great fixative raw materials of classical perfumery.

It is especially useful in:

- Animal perfumery.

- Classic Chypres.

- Floral perfumes.

- Oriental compositions.

- Leather bases.

- Niche perfumery.

It combines especially well with:

- Oud.

- Rose.

- Jasmine.

- Narcissus.

- Incense.

- Ambergris.

- Castoreum.

- Labdanum.

- Oakmoss.

- Sandalwood.

In extremely low concentrations, it can add volume, diffusion, and a sense of naturalness that is difficult to replicate with other materials.

Technical observations

- Presentation: pure paste.

- Color: dark brown to reddish brown.

- Consistency: pasty.

- Aromatic intensity: extremely high.

- Diffusion: very high.

- Tenacity: exceptional.

Due to its potency, it is recommended to work initially with appropriate dilutions before incorporating it into a formula.

Interest for the perfumer

Few raw materials possess a transformative capacity comparable to that of civet. Beyond its own aroma, it stands out for its ability to enhance other materials and impart a sense of life, movement, and depth to a composition.

Historically, it has been used in some of the most important perfumes of the 20th century, especially in floral, oriental, and animalic formulas where it acted as a fixative and aromatic enhancer.

Availability

Currently available in pure paste form for experienced perfumers.

Civet tincture is in the process of maceration and aging, allowing the material to evolve and develop a more rounded profile before its future availability.

Fine perfumery material

Civet paste is one of the most demanding and fascinating raw materials in natural perfumery. Its extraordinary potency, complexity, and transformative capacity make it a unique tool for those who wish to explore the traditional techniques of classic animal perfumery.

A historical raw material whose influence remains irreplaceable in numerous high perfumery creations.
