Molecular Heart Frankincense Essential Oil (Boswellia carterii)

Origin: Somalia

Botanical name: Boswellia carterii

Extraction: Molecular distillation from frankincense essential oil, preferentially selecting the heart fractions and eliminating some of the more volatile compounds present in the initial output.

Olfactory Description

This oil represents a more concentrated and refined interpretation of traditional frankincense. Through molecular distillation, the most interesting aromatic heart fractions are isolated, resulting in a deeper, softer, and more persistent profile.

Unlike conventional Boswellia carterii essential oil, where citrus, terpenic, and fresh notes initially predominate, this heart fraction has a lower presence of volatile compounds and a more focused expression of the resinous, balsamic, and woody aspects of the resin.

The aroma is characterized by clean frankincense notes, warm resin, dry wood, and subtle amber nuances. As it evolves, mineral and balsamic facets emerge, reminiscent of the interior of an old church or gently warmed resin without burning.

Aromatic Evolution

- Top notes: resinous, clean, and gently balsamic.

- Heart notes: warm frankincense, dry wood, and aromatic resin.

- Base notes: amber, mineral, and persistently balsamic.

Applications in Perfumery

A particularly valuable material for adding resinous depth without the characteristic volatility of conventional frankincense essential oils.

It is especially useful in:

- Oriental perfumery.

- Amber compositions.

- Woody fragrances.

- Liturgical accords.

- Arab-inspired perfumes.

- Complex resinous bases.

It pairs particularly well with:

- Myrrh.

- Labdanum.

- Benzoin.

- Vetiver.

- Cedar.

- Sandalwood.

- Patchouli.

- Rose.

- Oud.

- Ambergris.

Its balanced profile allows it to be used in both masculine and feminine compositions, providing structure and elegance without dominating the overall scent.

Technical Observations

- Color: pale yellow to light gold.

- Consistency: fluid.

- Aromatic intensity: medium-high.

- Diffusion: medium.

- Tenacity: superior to conventional frankincense essential oil.

The partial removal of lighter fractions results in a more stable and persistent material, especially valued by perfumers seeking the character of frankincense without the excessive volatility of the top notes.

Interest for the Perfumer

The heart fractions of frankincense are often considered some of the most valuable parts of the distillation, as they concentrate much of the resinous and balsamic richness of the raw material. The result is a rounder, deeper frankincense that is easier to integrate into complex formulas, retaining the characteristic identity of Boswellia carterii while enhancing its nobler and longer-lasting facet.
