Hyraceum — African Stone

Hyraceum, also known as African Stone, is a unique animal-derived ingredient used in natural perfumery. It is formed from ancient communal deposits of the rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) which, over hundreds or thousands of years, dry and mineralize into a hard, dark substance.

Its collection does not require capturing or sacrificing the animal.

In its raw form, it has an animalic, mineral, and earthy scent, with facets reminiscent of musk, castoreum, civet, leather, tobacco, and dark wood. When tinctured and well diluted, it becomes warmer, drier, and more elegant, adding depth, fixation, and a distinct animalic feel to the composition.

Origin: Africa
Uses: perfumery · tinctures · incense
