Vintage Spike Lavender Essential Oil (1960)
Origin: Spain
Botanical name: Lavandula latifolia
Distillery: Court Georgi
Approximate year of production: 1960
Extraction: Steam distillation of flowering tops.
Olfactory description
This spike lavender essential oil is an exceptional testament to 20th-century perfumery and aromatic distillation. Distilled by the historic house of Court Georgi and preserved for over six decades, it presents an aromatic profile profoundly transformed by the passage of time.
Unlike a modern spike lavender, where camphoraceous, fresh, and herbaceous notes predominate, prolonged aging has considerably softened the more aggressive facets, allowing more complex and refined nuances to emerge.
The opening retains the characteristic aromatic character of Spanish lavender, although notably more rounded and elegant. In the heart, notes of dry hay, withered flowers, Mediterranean aromatic herbs, and light balsamic nuances emerge. The base reveals woody, warm, and slightly amber facets rarely found in recent essential oils.
The result is a raw material of extraordinary complexity, halfway between a classic essential oil and a true olfactory collector's item.
Aromatic evolution
- Top: dry, aromatic, and gently camphoraceous lavender.
- Heart: hay, Mediterranean herbs, and dried flowers.
- Base: woody, balsamic, and warmly amber.
Applications in perfumery
Particularly interesting material for:
- Historical perfumery.
- Vintage reconstructions.
- Classic fougères.
- Aromatic chypres.
- Mediterranean accords.
- Collections of ancient raw materials.
It combines particularly well with:
- Oakmoss.
- Geranium.
- Rosemary.
- Sage.
- Vetiver.
- Patchouli.
- Frankincense.
- Labdanum.
- Bergamot.
- Coumarin.
Its aged profile adds depth and naturalness to compositions where a contemporary essential oil might be excessively fresh or linear.
Technical observations
- Color: golden yellow to deep amber.
- Consistency: fluid.
- Aromatic intensity: medium.
- Diffusion: medium.
- Tenacity: high for a lavender essential oil.
As with other historical aromatic materials, decades of natural maturation have favored the integration of numerous aromatic components, generating a smoother, more complex, and harmonious profile.
Historical interest
The House of Koch in Grasse was one of the prominent names in the French aromatic industry for much of the 20th century. Materials preserved from that era offer an exceptional opportunity to study and experience raw materials produced using traditional methods that have practically disappeared today.
Vintage essential oils also allow us to observe how natural aromatic materials evolve over decades of proper storage, developing facets impossible to reproduce through modern accelerated aging processes.
Collector's item
Beyond its perfumery value, this essential oil represents an authentic aromatic capsule from the past. Its rarity, age, and provenance make it a particularly prized piece for collectors, perfumers, and enthusiasts interested in the history of natural raw materials.
Every drop preserves part of the aromatic heritage of an era when Grasse was still the global center of traditional perfumery and distillations were carried out following methods passed down through generations.
