The composition

Iris has no scent when it is pulled from the ground. Its perfume is born later, in the darkness of the store, where the dried rhizome takes years to turn its precursors into irones, the molecules of violet. This resinoid of Italian Iris pallida, refined by molecular distillation, gathers that long process into a powdery, floral and woody material.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Iris pallida Lam. is a rhizomatous iris of the Iridaceae family, native to Italy and the north-western Balkans. In Tuscany, the Pratomagno and Chianti areas have traditionally grown it for perfumery.

The aromatic material is in the rhizome. It is harvested in the third year of cultivation, at the end of summer, then dried and stored for up to three or four years. Fresh, the rhizome contains no irones: they form slowly, through the oxidation of compounds called iridals.

It should not be confused with orris from Iris × germanica or Iris florentina, which are also sold under the same name.

+ 02 — Extraction and production

Orris yields several different materials. The best known is orris butter, obtained by steam distillation: semi-solid and rich in odourless fatty acids. The resinoid, by contrast, is obtained by extracting the dried rhizome with solvent.

This resinoid then undergoes molecular distillation. At very low pressure and moderate temperature, the process separates the aromatic fraction from the heavy components of the extract without exposing it to prolonged heat.

The result is a clear liquid, a very pale yellow verging on bone white.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The rhizome. Freshly harvested, it lacks the smell of orris. After ageing, the violet note of the irones appears.

The neat resinoid. Powdery, floral, woody and slightly earthy, with a velvety texture.

+ 04 — Uses in perfumery
  • Violet and iris: the natural heart of powdery accords.
  • Florals: adds texture, softness and a velvety feel.
  • Woods: extends and softens woody bases.
  • Classic-style compositions: where iris brings elegance and body.
