The composition

Leather Oud from Laos – Hydrodistilled from infected wood

This Laotian oud is obtained by hydrodistillation using exclusively infected, resinated wood, without the white wood that surrounds it. Before distillation, the wood undergoes a moderate fermentation, enough to give it depth and character, but without pushing it towards the sour or heavily fermented profiles found in other ouds.

Smelled straight from the bottle, the first impression can be somewhat bitter, with a dark fruity sensation, almost like fruit peel. It is a brief opening that doesn't fully anticipate what comes next.

It is on the skin that it reveals its true character: leather, smoke and phenolic facets unfold slowly and densely. It has that distinctive aroma many associate with barnyard oud, but with no sourness at all. There are no lactic notes, no cheesy notes, none of the tart side of heavy fermentation. What remains is a clean, dry stable: worked leather, smoked wood and a dark depth.

Despite its darkness, it is an exceptionally elegant oud. Its evolution is slow and enveloping, and it brings a deeply meditative, relaxing feeling. An oud to wear in silence, to smell with your eyes closed.

In perfumery it is especially valuable for adding a dark, smoky-leather base with nobility, without the animalic aggressiveness of more fermented ouds. Ideal for leather compositions, tobacco accords, incense and Arabian-inspired perfumes.

Simplistic ingredient list that hides an elegant development.
Powdery rooty facets surround a clean oud mix in which Hainan profile shines brighter, woody slightly resinous, sweet and leathery notes are predominant, with orris root as a continuous support. Ambergris can be felt soon and gains strength as time progresses, respectful to the oud.

Longevity is excellent, projection is more subtle but, as attar standards go, it's enough and suited to the elegant character of the composition. Thanks to that, it probably can be worn throughout the whole year, and I can confirm it survives on skin enough to be felt after a dip at the sea. Having said that, it probably suits more daily wear, specially if you work dressed up in a suit. Traditionally masculine leaning but I think it would suit anyone willing.

Underpriced for what it is and its ingredients. I'm glad I bough three grams as I gave one to a friend as a present and I keep two.

The owner of the brand is also really communicative, open and a good inspiration for those that want to share his passion.
