The composition

A Nepalese white sandalwood oil produced by steam distillation from trees cultivated in the country. It is also the base for our Spanish saffron macerated in Nepalese sandalwood.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Santalum album L., white sandalwood, is a tree in the Santalaceae family. It is native to Java, the Lesser Sunda Islands, northern Australia and the Philippines, and has been cultivated for centuries in South Asia; in Nepal it is an introduced species.

The aromatic material is the heartwood, the inner wood of the trunk and roots, which becomes richer in oil as the tree ages.

+ 02 — Extraction and production

The wood is powdered and steam-distilled. The combined presence of α- and β-santalol is the chemical signature of S. album.

Sandalwood is frequently adulterated: a 2021 study found that none of six commercial oils sold as sandalwood met the international standard, and several were amyris or synthetic products.

+ 03 — Uses in perfumery
  • Attars and macerations: a traditional base for flowers, saffron and spices.
  • Woody bases: fixation and softness.
  • Rose and oud: included in our set with CO₂-extracted oud and Damask rose.
