The composition

Seaweed absolute is one of the most singular materials in natural perfumery, because it changes completely with dilution. Neat, it is woody and dark, with echoes of oak and coffee; diluted, the green seaweed appears, and at the highest dilution, the sea. It is offered neat and at 10% in ethanol.

+ 01 — Origin

Fucus vesiculosus L., bladderwrack, is a brown alga of the Fucaceae family. It is not a plant: brown algae form a lineage of their own, very distant from land plants.

It is very common on the rocky shores of the North Atlantic, from the White Sea in Russia to Portugal and North Carolina, where it grows in the middle band of the intertidal zone. It is recognised by the air bladders it carries in pairs on either side of the midrib, which keep it afloat at high tide.

+ 02 — Extraction and production

The thallus of the seaweed is solvent-extracted to obtain a concrete, which is washed in ethanol to give the absolute.

It is offered in two forms: neat, for those who want to work with the whole material, and at 10% in ethanol, easier to dose.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

Neat. Woody and dark, in an oak and coffee style.

At 10%. Its dark base is still noticeable, and the green seaweed facet begins to emerge.

At 0.1%. It reveals its marine facet.

+ 04 — Uses in perfumery
  • Natural marine accords: at very low doses, a real, non-synthetic sea.
  • Chypres and moss bases: its dark, green base pairs with oakmoss.
  • Leather, tobacco and woods: the oak and coffee facet of the neat material.
  • Ambergris: reinforces its marine, seaweed side.
