The composition

One gram of raw ambergris, white grade: the most luminous and airy expression of this marine material, and one of the most difficult to find. It smells of clean sea, sea breeze, and salt spray.

+ 01 — Origin

Ambergris is a waxy substance that forms in the intestine of the sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus. The animal expels it into the sea, where it can float for years before reaching the shore; the sun, oxygen, and salt water transform its color, texture, and scent.

The white, gray, brown, and black grades summarize common profiles. White is the mildest and most marine, with a faint animality.

+ 02 — Use and preparation

Raw ambergris is used to prepare tinctures, by macerating it in alcohol for months. Its scent comes primarily from ambrein, its main component, and from the molecules formed during oxidation, such as ambroxide and ambrinol.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The piece. Clean sea, refreshing sea breeze, and salt spray.

+ 04 — Applications in perfumery
  • Custom tinctures: for the perfumer who wants to create and mature their own tincture.
  • Delicate and transparent perfumes: a marine and luminous facet.
