The composition

For the ancient Egyptians, the blue lotus was the flower of the sun: it opens each morning above the water and closes at dusk. This absolute, made from flowers grown in Thailand, combines the flower's aquatic delicacy with a waxy, velvety texture and nuances of ripe cherry, soft fruit and pollen.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Despite its name, blue lotus is not a true lotus but a water lily. True lotus belongs to Nelumbo, a different family; blue lotus is Nymphaea caerulea Savigny, in the Nymphaeaceae family, currently classified botanically as Nymphaea nouchali var. caerulea.

It is a rhizomatous aquatic plant native to Africa, from Egypt along the Nile to the south of the continent, and to southern Arabia. Its flowers open in mid-morning and close around dusk; each flower lasts approximately four days.

In ancient Egypt it symbolised the sun and rebirth. Its petals have been found in tombs, including Tutankhamun's. In Thailand it is cultivated mainly as an ornamental flower and for infusions, with part of the harvest reserved for this absolute.

+ 02 — Extraction and production

The flowers are extracted with organic solvents to obtain a concrete, which is subsequently purified into an absolute. Low-temperature solvent extraction is commonly used for delicate flowers whose scent suffers from the heat of distillation.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The absolute. Aquatic floral, waxy and velvety. Notes of ripe cherry, soft fruit and pollen sit over an enveloping floral depth, subtly sweet and almost hypnotic in character.

+ 04 — Uses in perfumery
  • Sophisticated florals: adds a fruity, waxy and enveloping dimension.
  • Natural aquatic accords: depth absent from synthetic aquatic accords.
  • Oriental and woody compositions: especially with sandalwood, orris, rose, ambergris and oud.
