The composition

On the island of Socotra, off the Horn of Africa, grows a tree found nowhere else that bleeds a blood-red resin. Socotra dragon’s blood is a historic resin of intense red colour and a dry, resinous, slightly smoky character.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Dracaena cinnabari Balf.f., the Socotra dragon tree, is a tree of the Asparagaceae family endemic to the island of Socotra, in Yemen, where it grows in arid areas. Its umbrella-shaped crown makes it unmistakable.

“Dragon’s blood” is a trade name applied to red resins from several species. The Socotra resin comes from this particular species.

+ 02 — Composition

D. cinnabari resin is rich in flavonoids and related compounds, including cinnabarone, chalcones and dihydrochalcones, as well as sterols and terpenoids. Its red colour comes from these pigments.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The resin. Dry, resinous and slightly smoky.

+ 04 — Uses
  • Incense: on charcoal, alone or with other resins.
  • Tinctures: we also offer it as a 30% tincture and as a dry distillation.
  • Perfumery: a dry, dark resinous facet in woody and smoky bases.
