The composition

Frankincense has two scents: that of the resin tear in your hand and that of the smoke rising from the charcoal. This oil captures the second. Obtained by dry distillation of Somali resin, it faithfully reproduces the aroma of frankincense exposed to direct heat: sacred smoke, bottled.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Somali frankincense is often sold as Boswellia carteri. Today that name is considered a synonym of Boswellia sacra Flück., of the Burseraceae family: a shrub or small tree of desert areas, native to northern and north-eastern Somalia, southern Yemen and south-western Oman.

The raw material is the oleo-gum-resin the tree exudes when its bark is cut, which hardens into tears in the air.

+ 02 — Extraction and production

In dry, or destructive, distillation the resin is heated in a closed vessel, without water or steam. The heat not only releases its volatile compounds: it also breaks down the heavy ones, and the resulting vapours condense into a dark oil. It is the same technique that gives cade oil or birch tar.

So this oil is not a stronger version of frankincense essential oil, but a different material. A pyrolysis study on B. sacra resin detected numerous heat-generated odorants that do not exist in unheated resin. Boswellic acids, the non-volatile components of the resin, are also transformed on burning.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The neat oil. Intensely smoky, with the character of frankincense resin burning on charcoal.

+ 04 — Uses in perfumery
  • Smoke and church accords: the smoke of the censer, not the cold resin.
  • Leather, oud and dark woods: smoky depth in base notes.
  • With distilled frankincense: combined with our molecularly distilled Boswellia heart, it unites the light of the resin with its smoke.
