Kynam, or qi-nan in Chinese, is the name reserved for the most resinous and prized agarwood. This wood comes from cultivated Aquilaria sinensis trees in China, around 10 years old, and has a resinous, woody, sweet, balsamic and slightly medicinal character.

＋ 01 — Origin and botany

Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.) Spreng. is an evergreen tree of the Thymelaeaceae family, native to south-eastern China. Its healthy wood is pale and odourless: the scent only appears when the tree, in response to a wound, impregnates the wood with dark resin.

In cultivation, that response is induced. The Kynam type is distinguished by wood that is especially laden with resin.

＋ 02 — Composition

2-(2-Phenylethyl)chromones are the characteristic components of agarwood. Studies on A. sinensis find that they dominate in Kynam, and point to 2-phenylethyl-4H-chromen-4-one as a marker of this type.

The wood. Resinous, woody, sweet and balsamic, with a slightly medicinal nuance.

＋ 04 — Uses

Heating: warmed on a heater plate or charcoal, the traditional use of agarwood.
Study: to know oud in its original form.
Extraction: tinctures and macerations.
