The composition

A resin from the mountains of Afghanistan, obtained from trees of the genus Pistacia, close relatives of the pistachio tree. Like Mediterranean mastic trees, these species exude a clear, aromatic resin used as incense and for chewing since antiquity.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

The genus Pistacia belongs to the Anacardiaceae family, which includes pistachio and mango. Several species, including the terebinth (Pistacia terebinthus L.) and Pistacia khinjuk Stocks, produce aromatic resins when their bark is incised.

This resin was supplied to us as P. terebinthus. However, that species is native to the Mediterranean basin, whereas P. khinjuk grows naturally in Afghanistan. We therefore identify it only to genus level: Pistacia sp.

+ 02 — Uses
  • Incense: burned on charcoal, alone or with other resins.
  • Tinctures and macerations: a clear resinous facet for perfumery.
  • Study: to explore resins from the pistachio family.
