The composition

Laos Boya Oud – Hydrodistilled after fermentation

If there is one aroma that defines traditional oud, it is this one. To my nose, Boya is the essence of classic Indian oud: the first thing that comes to mind when we think of the oud oils of old.

It is made mainly from the white wood surrounding the infected areas, together with small amounts of resinated wood. Before distillation, the wood undergoes a long fermentation, which gives it its deeply traditional character. The result is an extract with a waxy consistency.

Its strength is truly extraordinary: animalic, intense and deep. Yet well diluted it reveals an unexpectedly elegant side, with very refined dry hay, slightly medicinal facets and raw, untanned leather. That hay is what sets it apart, bringing a sophistication that contrasts with its power.

On the market, this material is often blended with sandalwood or patchouli to create compositions that are sometimes sold as pure oud. Here you get it as it is, unblended.

It may seem like an expensive material, but tiny amounts are enough to give character and depth to a composition, so in practice it is surprisingly economical. Ideal for perfumers looking for the classic, animalic and deep profile of Indian oud.

Simplistic ingredient list that hides an elegant development.
Powdery rooty facets surround a clean oud mix in which Hainan profile shines brighter, woody slightly resinous, sweet and leathery notes are predominant, with orris root as a continuous support. Ambergris can be felt soon and gains strength as time progresses, respectful to the oud.

Longevity is excellent, projection is more subtle but, as attar standards go, it's enough and suited to the elegant character of the composition. Thanks to that, it probably can be worn throughout the whole year, and I can confirm it survives on skin enough to be felt after a dip at the sea. Having said that, it probably suits more daily wear, specially if you work dressed up in a suit. Traditionally masculine leaning but I think it would suit anyone willing.

Underpriced for what it is and its ingredients. I'm glad I bough three grams as I gave one to a friend as a present and I keep two.

The owner of the brand is also really communicative, open and a good inspiration for those that want to share his passion.
