The composition

An Aceh patchouli distilled from fermented leaves and aged since 2010. More than fifteen years of rest have produced a deep, earthy, woody oil: the dark, classic face of patchouli.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. is a perennial subshrub of the Lamiaceae family, the mint and lavender family. It is native to Sri Lanka, Sumatra, Java, Malaysia, the Philippines and New Guinea; in Aceh, in northern Sumatra, it grows within its natural range.

The aromatic part is the leaves.

+ 02 — Extraction and production

For this oil, the leaves were fermented before steam distillation, which gives a darker oil. Patchouli’s characteristic component is patchouli alcohol.

The oil has then rested since 2010. Patchouli is one of the few essential oils valued more the longer it ages.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The neat oil. Deep, earthy and woody.

+ 04 — Uses in perfumery
  • Chypre and leather: a dark, long-lasting base.
  • Orientals: with labdanum, resins and oud.
  • Study: set against our Aceh 2026, it shows the effect of fermentation and ageing.
