The composition

On arrival, this Madagascan patchouli showed a more pronounced earthy tone than its siblings: not as woody as the Indonesian, nor as chocolatey as the Indian. A reading of patchouli centred on the earth.

+ 01 — Origin and botany

Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. is a perennial subshrub of the Lamiaceae family, the mint and lavender family. It is native to Sri Lanka, Sumatra, Java, Malaysia, the Philippines and New Guinea. In Madagascar it is a crop.

The aromatic part is the leaves.

+ 02 — Extraction and production

The leaves are dried before being steam-distilled. The oil’s characteristic component is patchouli alcohol. This batch is from the 2026 harvest.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The neat oil. Earthy, less woody than Indonesian patchouli and less chocolatey than Indian.

+ 04 — Uses in perfumery
  • Chypre: an earthy, long-lasting base.
  • Earth and root accords: with vetiver and mosses.
  • Studying origins: part of our Nepal, Aceh and Madagascar patchouli trio.
