The composition

The Damask rose is the perfumery rose par excellence. This Iranian oil, distilled from its petals, offers a natural rose with an intense, rich and recognisable floral profile, and another reading of the species compared with roses from other producing regions.

＋ 01 — Origin and botany

Rosa × damascena Herrm. is not a wild species: it is an ancient hybrid between Rosa gallica and Rosa moschata, of the Rosaceae family. It has been cultivated for centuries to produce rose water and rose oil.

The flowers are picked by hand, just opened, and distilled as soon as possible so as not to lose their scent.

＋ 02 — Extraction and production

The fresh petals are steam-distilled. The resulting oil is separated from the rose water produced at the same time.

In the cold, rose oil can thicken or crystallise. This is due to its natural waxes and is not a defect: it flows again when warmed.

＋ 03 — Olfactory profile

The neat oil. Floral, intense, rich and recognisable.

Simplistic ingredient list that hides an elegant development.
Powdery rooty facets surround a clean oud mix in which Hainan profile shines brighter, woody slightly resinous, sweet and leathery notes are predominant, with orris root as a continuous support. Ambergris can be felt soon and gains strength as time progresses, respectful to the oud.

Longevity is excellent, projection is more subtle but, as attar standards go, it's enough and suited to the elegant character of the composition. Thanks to that, it probably can be worn throughout the whole year, and I can confirm it survives on skin enough to be felt after a dip at the sea. Having said that, it probably suits more daily wear, specially if you work dressed up in a suit. Traditionally masculine leaning but I think it would suit anyone willing.

Underpriced for what it is and its ingredients. I'm glad I bough three grams as I gave one to a friend as a present and I keep two.

The owner of the brand is also really communicative, open and a good inspiration for those that want to share his passion.
