Vetiver: origins, aromatic profiles and uses in perfumery

Discovery set de vetiver

Vetiver is one of the most important raw materials in natural perfumery. Distilled from the roots of Chrysopogon zizanioides (formerly Vetiveria zizanioides), this essential oil has extraordinary aromatic complexity and a unique ability to bring depth, fixation and elegance to a composition.

Yet speaking of vetiver as a single material oversimplifies a far richer reality. As with oud, sandalwood or wine, geographic origin has an enormous influence on the final aromatic profile.

Climate, soil composition, the age of the roots and distillation techniques give each origin a personality of its own.

Haitian vetiver

Haitian vetiver is probably the best known and most widely used in fine perfumery.

Its scent opens fresh and bright, with nuances reminiscent of grapefruit, citrus peel and certain green fruits. As it develops, soft, slightly earthy and very elegant woody facets emerge.

Compared with other vetivers it is less dark and less smoky, offering a sense of cleanliness and sophistication that explains its huge popularity in masculine perfumery and modern compositions.

Aromatic profile:

  • Grapefruit
  • Green fruits
  • Dry wood
  • Fresh grass
  • Clean root
  • Elegant green facets

Javanese vetiver

If Haiti represents the luminous side of vetiver, Java represents its deepest, darkest side.

Javanese vetiver develops intensely smoky notes reminiscent of charred wood, dark cocoa, roasted coffee and damp earth. Its character is more robust, earthier and considerably more tenacious than other origins.

It has extraordinary depth and an almost hypnotic presence, making it a prized tool for building oriental, leather, incense and oud compositions.

Aromatic profile:

  • Smoke
  • Roasted coffee
  • Bitter cocoa
  • Damp earth
  • Charred wood
  • Dark root

Sri Lankan vetiver

Sri Lankan vetiver sits between the freshness of Haitian vetiver and the dark intensity of Javanese vetiver.

Its profile keeps a pleasant green freshness with a soft, elegant depth. It shows nuances of fresh roots, damp wood and dry vegetation, while retaining a very balanced natural feel.

It is one of the most versatile vetivers, able to add complexity without taking over a composition.

Indian vetiver (khus)

India is considered the historic cradle of vetiver.

Known locally as khus, this vetiver keeps a particularly intense green facet reminiscent of roots freshly pulled from the soil, aromatic herbs and damp vegetation.

It has a very characteristic cooling quality, which explains its traditional use to scent water, textiles and living spaces during the hottest months. Its aroma conveys the feeling of a living root, still connected to the soil it came from.

Aromatic profile:

  • Fresh root
  • Green grass
  • Damp earth
  • Vegetation
  • Aquatic facets
  • Natural freshness

Madagascan vetiver

Madagascan vetiver stands out for its exceptionally balanced and refined character. Unlike more citrusy or smokier origins, it develops a deeply natural atmosphere reminiscent of the damp earth of a tropical forest, roots buried in fertile soil and paths soaked after several days of rain.

More than the classic petrichor of rain on dry stone, Malagasy vetiver evokes walking through a humid forest where the earth remains cool, dark and alive. It is a relaxing, serene and deeply comforting scent.

In our case these facets are especially enhanced by ageing the oil for two years in goatskin. This traditional process softens the greener, sharper notes of freshly distilled vetiver, developing a much deeper aromatic richness with nuances of wet earth, damp roots, aged wood and delicate nutty notes.

The result is an exceptionally round, elegant and meditative vetiver, ideal for those seeking the most natural and contemplative side of this extraordinary root.

Aromatic profile:

  • Damp forest earth
  • Fresh roots
  • Fertile soil
  • Damp wood
  • Fresh walnut
  • Soft green facets
  • A forest after the rain
