Brown ambergris is the warmer, more animalic side of this marine material. This tincture, prepared on 13 August 2026, is supplied unfiltered so the material can continue evolving during maceration.

＋ 01 — Origin

Ambergris is a waxy substance formed in the intestines of the sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus. The animal expels it into the sea, where it may float for years before reaching the shore; sunlight, oxygen and saltwater transform its colour and aroma.

Every piece is therefore different. White, grey, brown and black are descriptive grades for common profiles, not absolute categories.

＋ 02 — Preparation

Ambergris is macerated in alcohol and the tincture is supplied unfiltered, with the material still inside. Its aroma comes mainly from ambrein, the primary constituent of ambergris, and from molecules produced by oxidation, such as ambroxide and ambrinol.

＋ 03 — Olfactory profile

The tincture. Warmer, earthier, more tobacco-like and muskier than other grades, with the material's characteristic marine and saline facet and an undertone of seaweed.

＋ 04 — Uses in perfumery

Amber and oriental accords: fixation, volume and depth.
Leather and animalic accords: warmth and a skin-like impression.
Floral, woody and marine compositions: in small doses, adds depth without dominating.
