The composition

Onycha is one of the oldest known aromatic materials: Exodus names it among the four ingredients of the sacred incense. This Red Sea operculum offers a mineral, marine, animalic and dry profile, with a texture hard to achieve with conventional materials.

+ 01 — Origin

The operculum is the small, nail-shaped plate certain sea snails use to close the opening of their shell. The most widely accepted identification of biblical onycha is the operculum of snails such as Strombus or Murex from the Red Sea; hence its Greek name, meaning “nail”.

Its exact identity in antiquity cannot be established with certainty, and some authors have proposed other materials, such as labdanum or benzoin. Operculum is still used today in incense and attars from the Arabian Peninsula.

+ 02 — Preparation

According to the Talmud, onycha was washed in an alkaline solution to clean it and then soaked in strong white wine or fermented caper juice to improve its fragrance.

Today it can be studied raw, burned as bakhoor or macerated to make tinctures.

+ 03 — Olfactory profile

The material. Mineral, marine, animalic and dry, with salty and leathery nuances.

+ 04 — Uses in perfumery
  • Tinctures and macerations: to make your own tincture.
  • Incense and bakhoor: its traditional use.
  • Animalic and marine accords: in small amounts it adds depth, salinity and leather.
